What Is the Structure of Multi-Layer Packaging Bags?

2026-05-27

Multi-layer packaging bags are flexible bags made by combining different films into one protective structure. Each layer has a specific function, such as printing, puncture resistance, oxygen barrier, moisture protection, heat sealing, or product display. They are widely used for food, coffee, pet food, powder, liquid refills, frozen products, medical supplies, and daily consumer goods.

Flexible packaging has become a major packaging format because it uses less material than many rigid containers while still providing strong product protection. The Flexible Packaging Association reported that flexible packaging represented about 21 percent of the U.S. packaging market, with industry sales of about USD 41.5 billion in 2022. This shows why many factories choose flexible bags for lighter shipping weight, better shelf display, and more efficient storage.

A typical multi-layer packaging bag may include an outer printing layer, a strength layer, a barrier layer, and an inner sealing layer. PET is often used as the outer layer because it supports printing and shape stability. PA can improve puncture resistance. Aluminum foil or high-barrier film can reduce oxygen, moisture, and light exposure. PE or CPP is commonly used as the inner heat-sealing layer.

Layer Structure        Common Material        Main Function

Outer layer        PET or printed film        Printing surface and appearance

Strength layer        PA or reinforced film        Puncture resistance and bag strength

Barrier layer        Aluminum foil or barrier film        Oxygen, moisture, and light protection

Inner layer        PE or CPP        Heat sealing and product contact protection

For food packaging bags, the structure should match the product. Coffee may need oxygen and aroma protection. Pet food may need higher puncture resistance and larger filling volume. Liquid refill pouches need stronger sealing and leakage control. Powder products need moisture protection and good seal strength. Food-contact material guidance from FDA and EU regulations also emphasizes that packaging materials should be suitable for their intended use.

JINGOU focuses on corrugated carton machinery for flexible packaging production needs. After multi-layer packaging bags are filled and sealed, they still need accurate secondary cartons for stacking, warehouse handling, and export shipping. Our carton forming machines, cardboard box forming machines, auto thin blade slitter scorers, and rotary slotter machines help factories produce cartons that match pouch size, weight, and shipping requirements.

Professional advice is to design the bag and carton together. A high-barrier pouch can protect the product inside, but poor outer carton sizing may still cause squeezing, seal stress, or stacking damage. JINGOU can help customers review pouch size, carton type, board thickness, slotting accuracy, small quantity order needs, and packaging workflow before equipment selection.

Share your bag structure, product weight, carton size, board specification, and order plan with JINGOU. Our team can recommend a practical carton machinery solution for stable multi-layer packaging bag production and safer shipping.
